It’s a soft wood, and sometimes it can be hard to stain without it getting splotchy. You might want to consider a wood conditioner before staining a big project. Puritan Pine really makes the wood grain on a piece of wood really pop. It has a nice rich color in a medium tone of brown. However, it doesn’t feel too gray and still maintains the brown woodiness you usually want in a wood stain.
Make sure to get all sanding dust and wood fibers off the surface before putting down a new coat. Myself, I would probably use a Minwax stain, they’re pretty good. I’d probably seal with a water-based poly, or blonde shellac . You’ll definitely need two coats of sealer with a steel-wool rub in between, no matter what you choose. Dye stains are much more forgiving when applying and even when a color variation do occur, which rare with dye, it can easily be buffed out.
I save my upholstery foam scraps and cut them into 3″ x 4″ foam sponges and dip them in a shallow plastic take out container filled with the top coat. varathane vs minwax stain Just load up the bottom of the sponge and wipe on row by row overlapping slightly. You can do a table top very quickly and get a great looking finish.
SO MUCH. Their stains are crappy and turn the wood splotchy, and now this. It is completely clear and does not have a yellow tint like oil based polyurethane. So it is best used when you don’t want a yellowish colored layer over your furniture and more so over light colored paint.
When dry, sand ( ) by hand just lightly enough to soften the high spots. The instructions recommend sanding between each layer but I’ve found the first sanding is by far the most important. I think the difference is that you’re painting trim, which is very narrow and long. Large and flat surfaces are always a challenge to get a perfectly smooth and even finish on. Just a thought, but I’m wondering if your frustration in not liking your colors is actually a dislike for the colors or could it be a dislike for the table itself?
4.Minwax Golden Oak.This is another mid-range stain color, but with a more neutral base undertone. Instead of the wood grains picking up redness, you can see they all went a very neutral brown. There is very little difference between the conditioned and unconditioned white and red oaks, but varathane vs minwax stain the other three definitely benefited from the pre-stain conditioner. 1.Minwax Pickled Oak.This stain added very little color to any of the boards, , but really brought out their natural color and grain. All of the wood types accepted the stain well, except the non-conditioned Birch side.
I suppose if I was making dressers or bigger pieces, they would use it more quickly, but still, stains go a pretty long way. If you’ve already returned from the hardware store, you’re varathane vs minwax stain just going to have to go back. And don’t use steel wool to sand if you’re using a water-based product. Tiny bits will come off on the wood and discolour your trim with rust.
Are you wondering what to choose when it comes to Minwax vs Varathane? Well, choosing between these two water-based spar urethrane can be tough.
I am definitely not a “matchy matchy” decorator, buy I do believe in having 2 pieces that have some unity to them. I also still love the idea of a natural fiber type rug for under the dining table. We have one and we don’t have any problem with moving the chairs. I do like the wipe-on poly when I want an oil-based poly.
I’m stupefied at the things you are able to do. I cannot believe how many times you stripped that table to get it right. I’m going to paint my kitchen cabinets and am dragggging my feet at having to strip them.
For finishing, Varathane offers a variety of products; Varathane paste finishing wax and Varathane polyurethane. Minwax polycrylic has a fast drying coat which is protective and water based. It takes very long to dry and the oil based poly tends to show a yellowish layer when used on light colored surfaces. There is a seemingly endless list of finish options.
